Day 6: Resting in Vernon

I've had a lovely rest day today. It's been a real treat to relax, to enjoy a delicious lunch in the nearby shopping centre (skate wing with capers and chips, washed down with a glass of Leffe beer) and a long nap in the afternoon.

It's given me a chance to think ahead a little more. I have fixed up with John Florance of BBC Radio Leicester to do an interview (for 08:10 on Sunday I hope) and drafted a little speech for the reception that's now been confirmed with the Mayor of Maromme on Monday. I'm hoping a friend will be able to translate it for me.

Things are falling into place in a wonderful way. I'm hoping I might get to meet an English couple in Rouen on Sunday, who are setting up a church-plant with the help of the Baptist Mission Society.

I've also been planning for tomorrow's walk. It takes me away from the Seine and up to the Eure river, from which this depártement takes its name. Things have been going well lately, so with a little more courage than I began the walk, I'm going to set off into the hills and forests tomorrow, relatively far from any significant town.

I've had lots of comments via the blog, facebook and twitter and some have been enquiring about my health. Feel free to skip the next paragraphs if you don't want the medical details.

The first blisters appeared on Day 2, not only on my feet but also, curiously, on the tips of the first three fingers of my left hand! It turns out that as I walked, my fingertips flick the seam of my trousers and over thousands of strides the effect had cumulated enough to cause the skin to blister. I assume that the fingers on my right hand are tougher than the left, or perhaps I walk asymmetrically. Anyway, the fingers have toughened up so no more problems there.

My feet blistered on the insides of my heels. They were rather painful and about 20mm across. I used some Compeed plasters and changed my insoles (I've been experimenting with a couple of alternatives lately and decided to bring both). Three days later and the blisters are disappearing and pain-free

  1. Hello Simon ~ I'm so glad you had a good rest day, and that you spent it in such a pleasant spot :-) I remember going through Vernon en route for Monet's garden at Giverny a few years ago.

I hope that today (Wed) will be another really good day, with suitable walking weather. It's lovely in Oadby this morning, although we DID experience a thunder & hail storm of apocalyptic proportions yesterday afternoon.
(That *might* be a slight exaggeration ...)

    All the best,
    Hilda.

  2. Hello Simon

Pleased to read your progress and to hear that all is going well your side of the Channel. Peggy Audrey, June and I have just returned from our annual mystery weekend with the Gt Glen W.I. Our mystery destination was Beddgelert in the heart of Snowdonia - wonderful. There was plenty of fun and laughter with the four of us, but quality time also for prayer and waiting on the Lord which was very special. The four days away was great - good company, good food, good wine with a backdrop of wonderful scenery together with blossom and plants of such vibrant colours. I know you will be finding your much much longer journey exciting and wish you well for the miles ahead. I will do my best to listen to John Florence on Sunday mMorning.

Bye for now and God Bless

    Gill
