I've never taken a whole Saturday for a walk before and the difference from my usual Monday experience was striking. Walking on a Saturday is a much more sociable experience. I greeted horse-riders, dog-walkers and a detectorist on a moped.
Jennifer took me out to Tugby, one of the tiny villages on the A47, east of Leicester. I walked through four villages whose names sound like medical conditions: Goadby, Noseley, Carlton Curlieu, Burton Overy and two that don't: Three Gates and Great Glen.
A very pleasant 12 miles altogether, the enjoyment of which was only threatened when I turned my ankle on an uneven verge. I hobbled to the ground, swallowed Ibuprofen and took my time getting back to my feet. It's a bit sore but not too bad.
Compared with the way I felt on Thursday morning, I'm now much more confident that walking day after day is feasible, and that the gentle start to the Walk Home is just about right.

Your medical conditions are also like a roll-call of childhood cycle rides for me. I grew up in Kibworth, but have lived in the North West for 25 years. Were I to set off on a 'walking home' pilgrimage I would have to pass that way. Before i left I often walked to Great Glen, Burton Overy or Fleckney for a pint or two with friends.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your walk.
